Baden-Württemberg Pavilion, Expo 2020

At Expo 2020 in Dubai, the German state of Baden-Württemberg will be presenting itself to the world as a hub for innovation, business, research and tourism – and for the first time in its own pavilion. NUSSLI will be realizing the parametrically planned structure with architecture and wood from Baden-Württemberg.

more project-details

Contrasting with the colorful and loud Expo atmosphere, a visit to the Baden-Württemberg House is intended to be a relaxing and inspiring experience. In 2300 square meters, exhibits, experiences, a restaurant, and VIP lounge spread out over two floors convey the innovative spirit, creativity, powerful network, and cultural heritage of this German state. Here, companies, educational institutions and research institutes will be presenting themselves as partners working together on solutions for the future. The physical structure of the pavilion in Dubai will also have a digital twin that can be paid a virtual visit from anywhere in the world.

Showcasing the Art of Engineering

The structure itself showcases the art of engineering and sustainable construction. Since the official handover of the construction site in August 2020 and the completion of the foundation three months later, the two-story pavilion has been rising towards the sky. The shape of the load-bearing structure, modeled on the Swabian half-timbered house, gives the pavilion a free-floating appearance. The hybrid timber building with a façade made of wood from Baden-Württemberg was planned parametrically. This allowed the architecture, building geometry and structural aspects to be planned and optimized in an integrally linked fashion. In addition, the data can also be utilized for subsequent projects. It is already clear that the Baden-Württemberg Haus will be repurposed as a permanent place of learning after the Expo.

Exhibition Focuses on Sustainability and Innovation

Visitors will enter the exhibition through an immersive forest located on the upper floor of the pavilion. Here, they will experience the nature, culture, and quality of life in Baden-Württemberg, as well as the importance of wood as a building material and an expression of sustainability. In a clearing in the forest, there are exhibits which represent the spirit of innovation, networking and the mutual sharing of science, art, culture and technology. The Source of Innovation with its extraordinary spatial ambience at the heart of the exhibition highlights people, innovations, stories and ideas, and invites visitors to take pause. On the lower level of the building, visitors will find the "Cool Pool", which provides a space for them to meet and interact.

About Expo 2020

Due to the corona pandemic, Expo 2020 Dubai took place one year later. Under the motto "Connecting Minds, Creating the Future," the Expo gates were open in Dubai from October 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022. It was the first World Expo to be held in an Arab and Muslim country. More than 190 countries and organizations presented themselves on the three thematic clusters Opportunities, Sustainability and Mobility, which together had the size of 610 football fields. Almost 25 million visitors, mostly from abroad, were at the Expo in Dubai.
