The Big Air Festival in Chur is a sports event and music festival at the same time. After the event premiere in winter 2021, the spectacular freeski and snowboard contests as well as thrilling concerts and parties took place again this year during two days.
Big Structures for Big Performances
The best freeskiers and snowboarders as well as 10 music acts contested the festival program in Chur. To ensure that the athletes had the best possible conditions for this important FIS Freeski & Snowboard Word Cup event, the NUSSLI team planned and installed the mighty Big Air Ramp on the Obere Au sports grounds. The 140 m long ramp was made of 300 tons of steel. The 4 m high kicker placed on the ramp enabled the winter sports acrobats to make jumps of up to 24 m in width. Freeskiers, snowboarders, men, women - they all showed their jumps and acrobatic tricks on the same ramp. They got to the start at a height of 40 m with the built-in lift. And to ensure that the audience got their money's worth, NUSSLI had previously transformed the Obere Au area into a festival site with a music stage and open-air infrastructure.
World Cup Season Started with a Party Atmosphere
For the freeskiers, the Big Air Chur meant a double take-off. Not only did they take off from the gigantic ramp, but also into the FIS World Cup season of freestylers. For the visitors, it was first and foremost about being there at the grandiose sports and music festival. The perfect start into the winter season! Because: Here the world champions and Olympic champions, the young talents and experienced freeski and snowboard acrobats met and provided thrills with their jumps. And: Here, international music stars such as Deichkind, Kraftklub and Busta Rhymes provided the right vibes on stage alongside Steff la Cheffe and Stress from the Swiss music scene as well as many other acts from Switzerland and abroad. According to their requirements in terms of show and sound, NUSSLI had planned the stage. It consisted of a stage house with a proscenium and a total width of 33 m, a depth of 24 m, and a height of 10.5 m. In addition, there were the PA wings for the loudspeakers, a loading ramp, side and back storage, as well as the front-of-house building for the lighting and sound technicians in the audience area, a wheelchair platform, supports for the rope cameras, and a service bridge for the audience.
Experience with Ramps of All Sizes
NUSSLI has a lot of experience with the construction of ramps in different dimensions and even at unusual locations in Switzerland and Europe. For example, the NUSSLI teams have already implemented the 39 m high and 120 m long Big Air ramp in the Mönchengladbach stadium, which is equivalent in height to a 16-story high-rise building. The ramp extended from outside the stadium across three plots of land, a two-lane road, the forecourt of the field hockey stadium, the stands and finally down into the field hockey stadium onto the playing field.
