Since the first Grand Slam in 1997, NUSSLI has been involved in organizing the beach volleyball event in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Every year during the first week of August, the international beach volleyball elite gathered there to play in front of nearly 7,000 spectators. NUSSLI built the extensive event infrastructure surrounding Center Court. This included the U-shaped main grandstand, a covered VIP grandstand, the lakefront and VIP terraces, press platforms, video structures, and various special platforms. The individual structures were erected within about three weeks and dismantled within two weeks after the tournament.

U-shaped main grandstand for 5,000 spectators

A defining feature of the facility was the U-shaped main grandstand. It encircled Center Court and gave the beach volleyball facility a distinct stadium-like character. At the same time, the grandstand’s design brought the audience close to the action and created a special atmosphere during the matches. The main grandstand could seat approximately 5,000 spectators. It was complemented by additional grandstands and viewing areas surrounding Center Court. Two large video screens, each 17 meters high and 10 meters wide, provided spectators with a clear view of the action.

3,000 square meters of lakefront and VIP terrace

Another key component of the event infrastructure was the 3,000-square-meter lakeside and VIP terrace with 1,600 VIP seats. It complemented the grandstand complex by providing a spacious area for the tournament’s VIP guests. The construction of the platform areas directly on the shores of Lake Wörthersee was particularly challenging. A total of 200 square meters of platform area was built into the lake. As a result, the event infrastructure extended not only across the sandy areas surrounding Center Court but also into the lakeshore area of Lake Wörthersee.

1,400 metric tons of steel in just three weeks

Each year, there was a very short timeframe available for setting up the extensive event infrastructure. A total of 1,400 metric tons of steel was used. Seventeen assemblers completed the various structures in just three weeks. In addition to the grandstands and terraces, the scope of work also included press platforms, video structures, and various special platforms. In addition, office and restroom containers were integrated into the grandstands and press platforms. The large amount of steel and the wide variety of different structures required precise coordination of the individual tasks. As a result, the entire infrastructure was completed in time for the tournament.
