NUSSLI completed the new temporary stadium for the football club Real Zaragoza.

While the historic Estadio La Romareda undergoes extensive renovations, Real Zaragoza has a modern temporary home stadium. NUSSLI, in collaboration with the Spanish construction company MLN Mariano López Navarro, planned and built a fully equipped stadium with seating for 20,000 spectators. The project is the first temporary stadium of its kind in Spain and demonstrates the possibilities offered by modular stadium solutions. Within a short period of time, a fully-fledged soccer arena suitable for professional matches was built. The temporary venue allows Real Zaragoza to play its home games without interruption during the renovation phase.

Temporary Stages for Challenging Transitional Phases

Renovating an existing stadium presents soccer clubs with major challenges: Matches must continue as usual while modern requirements for comfort, safety, and infrastructure are implemented. This is precisely where a temporary stadium offers a flexible alternative. For Real Zaragoza, a customized interim solution was created in the north parking lot of Expo Zaragoza. The arena meets the requirements of professional soccer and provides fans, teams, and the media with a fully functional venue while renovations are underway at Estadio La Romareda. The stadium will be used for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 seasons, thereby bridging the gap between the club’s tradition and its future.

Stadium Construction in Record Time

The stadium was built using NUSSLI’s modular construction system. Prefabricated system components enable efficient planning, rapid on-site assembly, and a high degree of flexibility in the design of the infrastructure. The stadium, with a total area of 120 × 80 meters, consists of four grandstands. Construction was completed within a few months, allowing the first home game to take place in the new arena as early as August 2025. The advantages of modular construction are evident not only in the short construction time. Once the facility is no longer in use, the entire infrastructure can be dismantled, and the individual system components can be reused for other projects. This creates a sustainable solution that conserves resources and enables long-term reuse.

Temporary Stadiums as a New Option

Real Zaragoza’s temporary stadium demonstrates that high-quality venues do not necessarily have to be permanent structures. Modular stadium solutions offer clubs new opportunities when existing stadiums are being renovated, expanded, or modernized. In the press release, you can learn more about how innovative interim solutions keep matches running.

Infrastructure for all game operations

The temporary stadium offers far more than just seating for spectators. In addition to the stands, the facility includes all the areas necessary for professional soccer operations. These include, among other things, ticket offices, a merchandise shop, food and beverage areas, and commentary booths for radio and television. Modern locker rooms, medical facilities, a doping control room, VIP lounges, and other functional areas are available for teams and officials. The needs of the fans were also a central focus during the planning process. The infrastructure was designed to ensure that visitors can enjoy a safe, comfortable, and atmospheric stadium experience.

Engineering for Professional Sports Facilities

A temporary stadium must meet the same requirements as a permanent sports facility. Safety, visibility, visitor flow, and technical infrastructure must be precisely coordinated. NUSSLI drew on its many years of experience from international Stadiums, Grandstands- and event projects into the planning and implementation. The combination of standardized systems and customized planning enabled a solution that was precisely tailored to Real Zaragoza’s needs. Together with MLN Mariano López Navarro, NUSSLI combined international expertise in temporary stadium construction with local know-how, thereby creating an innovative solution for Spanish soccer.
