Strong Constructions for Strong Sound

For NATURE ONE, event service provider NUSSLI built the stage for the centerpiece of the techno festival "OpenAirFloor" - with truss constructions for extra bass.

August 2023

From August 4 to 6, 2023, the basses at NATURE ONE massaged the eardrums and bodies of electronic music fans at the rocket base Pydna. The special thing about the festival in Hunsrück are the unusual constructions for the floors and the clubs.

Stage for the “Who is Who” of the DJ scene

The heart of NATURE ONE is the “OpenAirFloor” with the spectacular laser, light and pyro show and the stage by NUSSLI. The 40-meter-wide, 14.5-meter-high and approximately 14-meter-deep stage wall made of system material was equipped with 4 LED screens in addition to various pyramid-shaped decorative elements; the remaining open spaces were covered with black mesh. For the DJs, the NUSSLI team planned and installed a canopy, which was additionally equipped with a sloping side covering due to weather conditions.

NUSSLI also integrated a skylounge with the best view of the stage into the two-story FOH tower.

Extra strong truss constructions

A real challenge for all project participants was the construction of the main PA. With trusses cantilevering up to four meters because the extra strong construction had to support the weight of all flying sound reinforcement elements with a total weight of 7.5 tons. The planners from NUSSLI, the stage designers, the structural engineers and also the stage technicians were therefore challenged in advance to jointly develop a solution — which met both the static and safety requirements as well as the design demands of the client. For the suspended truss pyramids, each with a lighting matrix at the top, slim solutions with a cantilever of almost four meters could also be created.

Optimized logistics with short distances for sustainability

To ensure the stability of the supporting structures with their imposing cantilevers, huge amounts of ballast were required. However, almost half of the originally required material transport could be saved because the festival organizers were able to provide 170 tons of ballast material themselves to weigh down the stage structures, tents and special constructions. These will remain on the location and will be used again for future editions of NATURE ONE.

A large part of the truckloads of NUSSLI rental material came directly and economically from the dismantling of the Jazz Open in Stuttgart. The reuse rate of the material used is over 99.3%.
