A Temple Made of Steel and Books

The largest and most prominent exhibition for contemporary art worldwide will be taking place in Kassel from June 10 to September 17, 2017: the 14th “documenta” exhibition. For this art exhibition, NUSSLI constructed a giant scaffolding framework to serve as the basic structure for “The Parthenon of Books”.

April 2017

In preparation for documenta 14 in Kassel, NUSSLI realized a walk-in scaffolding structure measuring 30 x 66 meters, which will serve as the basic framework for “The Parthenon of Books”, designed by the artist Marta Minujín. This structure will subsequently be cladded with books from all over the world which were either banned in the past but in print again today or continue to be prohibited.

In a second phase at the end of May, the building will be expanded with staircases along its entire length and front side. A total of 300 metric tons of material will be used for the construction of the Parthenon.

The Parthenon on the Acropolis of Athens is one of the most famous ancient Greek monuments still in existence. The idea for “The Parthenon of Books” in Kassel is derived from the “Partenón de Libros”, which was built in Buenos Aires in 1983.
