Grandstands, stadiums and arenas

The new Wildparkstadion in Karlsruhe was built while matches continued to be played—a challenge that required a flexible interim solution. To address this, NUSSLI planned and constructed two temporary grandstands, which ensured the necessary stadium capacity throughout the entire construction period. Thanks to the stadium’s modular infrastructure, Karlsruher SC was able to host its home games without having to use an alternate stadium until the new stadium sections were completed. Once construction was finished, the temporary structures were dismantled as scheduled.

Temporary bleachers to ensure uninterrupted game play

While the Wildparkstadion was being rebuilt in sections, NUSSLI provided the necessary infrastructure to keep games running by erecting two temporary grandstands behind the goals. The modular structures served as Interim Solution, until the new stadium sections were completed. They were then gradually dismantled, and the project was successfully completed. NUSSLI handled the technical planning and construction of the two temporary grandstands. The modular grandstand system enabled a cost-effective, safe, and on-schedule implementation. The project team needed only about eight weeks to erect each grandstand.

Stadium infrastructure in accordance with DFL and DFB guidelines

To ensure that league and cup matches could continue to be held at Wildparkstadion, the requirements set by the DFL and DFB had to be met at all times. These stipulate a minimum capacity of 15,000 spectator seats throughout the entire construction period. NUSSLI developed a custom-fit grandstand solution for this purpose. First, the temporary north grandstand was built, providing approximately 5,000 standing-room-only spots for home fans. After its completion, a roof was added. NUSSLI then erected the south grandstand with approximately 4,000 standing spaces and 400 seats for home and away fans. In total, the temporary stadium solution provided approximately 9,000 standing spaces and 400 seats.

Custom-designed grandstand solutions for every need

Every stadium project has different requirements in terms of capacity, use, and infrastructure. That is why NUSSLI develops temporary grandstands that are precisely tailored to the respective construction phase and subsequent use. At Wildparkstadion, the north grandstand was equipped with a roof, while the south grandstand was intentionally designed as an open grandstand. Whether it’s a covered main grandstand, an open standing-room-only grandstand, or a complete temporary stadium solution—thanks to the modular Grandstand System A wide variety of requirements can be met cost-effectively and flexibly.

Advantages of Temporary Bleachers During Stadium Renovations

Temporary grandstands are a proven solution when stadiums need to remain in use during renovation or modernization. They provide the necessary spectator capacity exactly where it is needed during each phase of construction and enable safe game operations without the need for an alternate stadium. Thanks to their modular design, temporary grandstands can be flexibly adapted to the project’s requirements and erected within a short period of time. Once construction is complete, the structures can be dismantled just as efficiently and reused at another location. This makes temporary stadium infrastructure a cost-effective, sustainable, and flexible solution for clubs, builders, and event organizers. NUSSLI implements customized solutions worldwide Grandstand Solutions, which optimally combine functionality, safety, and spectator comfort.

Elversberg is also relying on NUSSLI's temporary solution

The project at the Wildparkstadion in Karlsruhe demonstrates how temporary grandstands enable matches to proceed smoothly during stadium renovations. NUSSLI has also successfully applied this concept to other stadium projects. One example is the stadium expansion for SV Elversberg: Following the team’s promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga, NUSSLI installed temporary and semi-permanent grandstands to ensure that the Ursapharm Arena met the requirements of the DFL and DFB despite ongoing modernization. Thanks to these flexible interim solutions, the stadium’s capacity could be gradually increased and expanded in parallel with the modernization.
