January 2025 Insight : Flexible solutions for public sports halls

Sports Hall, Allschwill

How temporary gyms from NUSSLI support municipalities in solving space problems in school and club sports and offer sustainable, flexible and quickly realizable solutions.

NUSSLI offers innovative temporary sports halls as flexible, sustainable and quickly implementable solutions for space problems in school and club sports. Examples from Allschwil, Oberwil, Stettlen and Albstadt show how high-quality constructions made from environmentally friendly, reusable materials create temporary solutions that can be used in the long term. The projects are characterized by their modular design, short implementation times and adaptability, enabling cities and municipalities to respond to acute bottlenecks while gaining time for long-term planning.

The advantages at a glance:

  • Sustainable and environmentally friendly

  • Very short set-up and dismantling times

  • SIA standard and Procab compliant

  • Without base plates

  • Own carpentry for woodwork

  • Complete solution from a single source

  • Sports hall according to BASPO standards

  • Accessibility with service aisle around the entire hall

  • Integration through color selection of the building envelope and the sports floor

  • Photovoltaic system option

Single gymnasium for the Allschwil school community

Allschwil secondary school urgently needed a new school sports hall from 2021. It was expected to be five to seven years before the planned replacement building would be available.

Those responsible at the Basel-Landschaft Cantonal Department of Building and Environmental Protection (BUD) therefore opted for a quick, high-quality and sustainable interim solution that would ensure school and sports operations immediately. Construction work began on July 5, 2021, when the summer vacations began for pupils and teachers at Allschwil School. In a short construction period, the temporary single sports hall was moved and opened for sports activities.

The durable and functional hall is made of environmentally friendly, reusable materials and has no foundations. Since then, the pupils have been practising gymnastics in the pleasant indoor climate of the wooden structure. The extension with checkrooms, sanitary facilities, technology and entrance area was built by NUSSLI's own timber construction team.

Fast, sustainable and ready for use

The school sports hall is part of a comprehensive school building plan and represents a high-quality interim solution until the new replacement building is completed. NUSSLI offered the canton of BL a complete solution without additional interfaces right from the start of the project.

Sports hall in Oberwil

Until recently, the Oberwil BL grammar school also lacked the necessary gyms for school sports. NUSSLI built a double gymnasium here to give those responsible time to develop a long-term school sports concept. The double gymnasium was ready for use at the end of July 2024 and can now be used flexibly for at least ten years. Enough time for the school and municipality to develop a long-term solution for school and club sports. The building in Oberwil is characterized by sustainable planning and rapid implementation. The sports hall gets by with strip foundations and consists of modular components that can be completely dismantled and reused at the end of their useful life. The material of the supporting structure consists of system construction elements, such as those used by NUSSLI for its event buildings, and can later be reused for the construction of grandstands or other event infrastructure, for example.

Oberwil has solved space problems efficiently and sustainably

The double gymnasium in Oberwil does not require a foundation and consists of a supporting structure made of system components and integrated timber modules, which were prefabricated in the NUSSLI production halls in parallel with the planning.

Sports hall in Stettlen

When the Bern and Biel School of Design relocated to Bernapark in Stettlen, NUSSLI supplemented the infrastructure of the new campus with a temporary sports hall, which was completed within a few weeks. Bernapark will provisionally house the university for around ten years. The hall blends seamlessly into the existing former industrial site and offers a pleasant indoor climate thanks to the use of wooden modules and pollutant-free building materials. "The construction of the sports hall is based on a proven modular construction system," explains Roman Horisberger, Project Manager at NUSSLI, adding: "The prefabricated wooden modules for changing rooms and equipment rooms were already equipped with all the necessary pipes, connections and sanitary facilities during production. This allowed us to keep the assembly time on site short and the hall was soon available for the school to use for sports." As with all temporary buildings from NUSSLI, complete dismantling and recycling of the materials at the end of their useful life is guaranteed.

Interim solution for the vocational school campus

The only thing missing for the school at the Bernapark site in Stettlen was a gymnasium. The Bern and Biel School of Design opted for a temporary sports hall from NUSSLI with ancillary rooms on two levels.

Interim sports hall Albstadt

The situation in Albstadt in Baden-Württemberg was somewhat different, but with the same problems: bottlenecks in the sports facilities offered by the town and clubs. The old Schlossberghalle had to be demolished due to massive damage. As an interim solution, NUSSLI built a 45 by 22 meter, three-section hall with a pitched roof. The hall consists of a steel structure with sandwich panels and was erected in just four months of planning and around six months of construction. Single-storey ancillary rooms in container design are attached to both long sides of the hall. Prefabricated and equipped in the factory, the 38 containers only had to be connected on site and connected to the supply lines. The equipment and storage rooms are located on the west side of the new sports hall. The changing rooms, toilets and showers are located on the east side. Operation for school and club sports is assured, and time can be taken to plan the final sports facility. This is because the temporary hall in lightweight steel construction is designed for a long service life and can easily remain in place for ten years or more.

Albstadt can breathe a sigh of relief for the time being

It took just one year from planning to completion of the temporary sports hall in Albstadt. Now there is plenty of time to plan and implement a permanent sports facility.

Temporary solution for school sports in Horgen

The municipality of Horgen has had a temporary double gymnasium built in the Gehren district to ensure that sports lessons are not canceled during the construction phase of the new secondary school building. NUSSLI built the modern facility in just ten weeks, which will be in use from June 2025. With an area of 32.5 × 28 meters and a mobile partition wall, the hall offers flexible usage options. A centrally accessible equipment room and wooden cladding, which ensures a pleasant indoor climate, round off the concept. The entire construction is based on reusable, environmentally friendly materials and impresses with its high quality and functionality. The temporary facility will ensure sports operations for schools and clubs in Horgen until at least 2030.

Divisible sports hall for Horgen

In Horgen, a temporary double gymnasium was built within ten weeks to ensure that sports lessons can continue during the construction period of a new school building until 2030. The sustainable, functional facility offers flexible usage options and ensures a seamless transition in sports operations.

Forward-looking solutions for municipalities

The temporary sports halls from NUSSLI offer a forward-looking answer to acute space problems thanks to their rapid realization and high-quality construction using reusable materials. They offer flexible, cost-effective and sustainable solutions for schools, sport and leisure.
