St. Catherine's Tower Zurich
The temporary Katharinen Tower is a 40-meter-high symbol of female creativity. The installation commemorates Katharina von Zimmern, the last abbess of Fraumünster Abbey, and honors the role of women from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Planning and implementation by NUSSLI
NUSSLI took on key tasks in the technical realization of the tower—from structural design and prefabrication to precise on-site construction. The entire structure was first erected on a trial basis in Hüttwilen in order to optimally coordinate the fabric bands and static requirements. The base is accessible, while the tower consists of modular lattice mast elements that were assembled using a mobile crane.
Sustainable structure with a powerful impact
The 1,000-meter-long green fabric ribbons bearing the names of 500 women give the tower its symbolic and visual presence. Illuminated like a lantern, it towers above the rooftops of Zurich. All elements used—from the lattice structure to the fabric—are reusable and designed to be sustainable. With technical precision and great attention to detail, NUSSLI implemented an idea that impressively connects history and the present.
