Royal Danish Theater, Aarhus
When the Royal Danish Theater stages its major summer productions outdoors every two years, the landscape surrounding the Moesgaard Museum becomes part of the theatrical experience itself. For the audience, NUSSLI creates the appropriate grandstand infrastructure: an 83.5-meter-wide premium grandstand with 2,988 seats, as well as additional platforms for people with limited mobility and the front-of-house area.
2,988 seats in a unique design
The grandstand stands out immediately due to its geometry. Instead of a simple, straight grandstand block, it is fan-shaped and opens generously toward the playing field. The individual rows of seats follow this unique shape, creating a wide spectator area that extends over 83.5 meters. Such unique floor plans are particularly interesting for outdoor events: The grandstand must not only accommodate as many seats as possible but also blend into the existing surroundings and the layout of the event. The shape of the grandstand significantly influences how the audience experiences the event area.
Accessible seats with their own platform
Accessibility is also a key consideration in grandstand design. NUSSLI constructed two wheelchair platforms with ramps in Aarhus. Each platform can accommodate eight wheelchairs, including accompanying persons. This integrates seating for people with limited mobility directly into the spectator infrastructure. This solution connects the elevated spectator areas with appropriate accessibility, making the grandstand usable by a diverse range of visitors.
Seating Systems for a Variety of Needs
Grandstands aren’t just about how many people they can accommodate. The choice of seating system also influences the comfort, appearance, and atmosphere of an event. In Aarhus, the premium version with white folding seats is being used. The seats give the large grandstand a uniform, high-quality appearance and offer the audience a comfortable place to sit. NUSSLI offers various grandstand systems and seating options for different events. Depending on the occasion, for example, black folding seats, shell seats, benches, or standing room can be used. This allows the grandstand to be tailored to the desired atmosphere, comfort requirements, and type of event. A concert can thus have a different feel than a sporting event or a business event.
From open-air theater to sporting events
Grandstands NUSSLI’s solutions are used at a wide variety of events—from sporting events and concerts to festivals, open-air theaters, and business events. Depending on the occasion, different factors are important: high capacity, optimal visibility, comfort, hospitality, or seamless integration into the venue. A variety of grandstand systems, seating options, and floor plans enable customized solutions. The Royal Danish Theatre exemplifies this versatility: For open-air productions such as Ragnarok and The Snow Queen, a grandstand was erected at the Moesgaard Museum that blends seamlessly into the unique surroundings. In this way, the seating area itself becomes part of the event experience.
