100 years after the 1924 Olympic Games, the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium in Colombes returned as an Olympic venue. In 2024, hockey took center stage at the historic stadium: the world’s best national teams competed here for Olympic medals. For NUSSLI, the event presented an opportunity to enhance a historic sports complex with modern event infrastructure for a major international event.
A stadium with a history and a future
The Yves-du-Manoir is more than just an Olympic venue. As early as 1924, it served as the main stadium for the Olympic Games in Paris, hosting, among other events, the opening ceremony and track and field competitions. In 1938, the World Cup soccer final was held here. Over the decades, numerous other national and international sporting events have taken place here. The modernization for Paris 2024 was therefore not designed as a complete rebuild. The historic grandstand was preserved, while new buildings, hockey fields, and temporary spectator stands were added to adapt the stadium to the requirements of the Olympic Games.

Historic Stadium Temporarily Expanded
To provide the spectator capacity required for Paris 2024, the existing stadium was temporarily expanded. To this end, NUSSLI constructed three temporary grandstands: two grandstands on the short sides of the field behind the goals, and another grandstand on the long side opposite the historic main grandstand. This created a closed spectator arena surrounding the central hockey field without replacing the historic main grandstand with a new structure. The temporary grandstands specifically complemented the existing stadium structure for the duration of the Olympic Games. Modeled after a classic arena, this created a combination of permanent infrastructure and temporary event facilities—a solution particularly well-suited for international sporting events with high spectator turnout.
Two hockey rinks for the Olympic Games
In addition to expanding the main field, NUSSLI built a second hockey field for the Olympic Games. This field was also equipped with temporary bleachers, making it ready for use as a spectator arena. In total, NUSSLI created 11,700 temporary seats at the Yves-du-Manoir for the Paris 2024 hockey competitions. The additional playing surfaces and spectator areas made it possible to efficiently manage the Olympic hockey tournament’s packed schedule. While games took place in front of large crowds on the main field, competitions could also be held on the second field and watched by spectators.

NUSSLI at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games
The hockey stadium at Yves-du-Manoir is one of several projects in which NUSSLI was involved for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. This project exemplifies how existing sports facilities can be expanded for a major international event: the historic structure is preserved, while temporary grandstands and additional infrastructure meet the event’s requirements.
