Since 2006, NUSSLI has been constructing the temporary grandstands and event structures for the Basel Tattoo in Basel. Year after year, a completely temporary arena for approximately 7,500 spectators is erected in the historic courtyard of the Basel Barracks. In addition to the grandstands, NUSSLI supplies numerous other event structures, such as lighting bases, container platforms, technical platforms, cable bridges, and access points. The modular design enables rapid assembly and disassembly and provides the infrastructural foundation for one of the world’s most significant military music festivals.

An arena steeped in tradition

Since its premiere, the Basel Tattoo has thrilled audiences with international military bands, pipes and drums, show bands, and spectacular choreography. The historic setting of the Basel Barracks lends the festival a unique atmosphere and makes the event a fixture on the international calendar. To ensure that these elaborate productions can take place in front of several thousand guests, NUSSLI transforms the barracks courtyard into a high-capacity event arena every year. The grandstands are precisely tailored to the spatial conditions and combine high safety standards with optimal visibility and a high level of visitor comfort.

Precision Under Time Pressure

The construction of the Basel Tattoo Arena is a logistical feat every year. In the cramped courtyard of the barracks, there is very little space available for unloading materials and assembly. At the same time, there is very little time for setup between the last use of the site and the festival. Approximately 400 metric tons of modular materials are processed and assembled into a fully functional event arena within about two weeks. As is tradition, the NUSSLI teams are supported by members of the Swiss Army, who provide logistical assistance during setup. Dismantling begins immediately after the event ends so that the barracks courtyard can be returned to its original use within a few days.

More Than Just Stands

For the Basel Tattoo, NUSSLI provides far more than just spectator stands. The arena includes numerous technical and functional infrastructure elements that make the event possible in the first place. In addition to the grandstands, the company constructs container platforms for skyboxes, platforms for backdrops and event technology, substructures for lighting and sound systems, follow-spot positions, as well as cable bridges and visitor access points. All elements are coordinated to form a seamless infrastructure for production, technical operations, performers, and the audience. The long-standing collaboration with the event organizer also makes it possible to continuously develop the arena and adapt it to new requirements.

New Spectator Arena for the 20th Anniversary

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Basel Tattoo, the arena received a completely redesigned grandstand system in 2026. Working together with the event organizer, NUSSLI developed a design that further enhances the spectator experience. Steeper grandstands create a more intimate atmosphere and make the arena feel even more like a closed-off event space. At the same time, wider staircases and an optimized seating arrangement ensure greater comfort and improved visitor flow. The performance area was also slightly adjusted and moved closer to the audience. In addition, the arena was fitted with a lighter-colored floor that meets the lighting design requirements and creates additional possibilities for modern lighting and show effects.

Two Decades of Joint Development

The partnership between NUSSLI and the Basel Tattoo has existed since the first event in 2006. Over the past twenty years, the infrastructure has been continuously developed and adapted to meet increasing demands. New safety standards, technical advancements, and changing visitor needs have been continuously incorporated into the planning process. Over the years, this has resulted in an arena that is not only functionally impressive but also contributes significantly to the distinctive character of the Basel Tattoo and provides the perfect setting for musical excellence every year.
