June 2025 News Temporary sports halls as a solution for acute space problems

More and more municipalities, schools and clubs are facing the same problem: a lack of hall capacity. With flexible and sustainable interim solutions, NUSSLI quickly provides a remedy - as is currently the case in Horgen (ZH), where a modern double gymnasium was built within a few weeks. This means that sports activities for pupils will be guaranteed for the next few years.
In Horgen, a new secondary school building with a triple gymnasium will be built on the Berghalden/Rainweg site by 2030. To ensure that there is no gap in the sports facilities during the construction period, a temporary double gymnasium was built in the Gehren district - planned and realized by NUSSLI, the specialist for functional and high-quality temporary buildings.

High-quality interim solution in record time
"In just ten weeks of construction, we have created a high-quality interim solution that offers real added value for all parties involved and meets the needs of all users," explains NUSSLI project manager Roman Horisberger. The double gymnasium, which went into operation in June, measures 32.5 × 28 × 8 meters and the sports area can be divided by a mobile partition wall. An equipment room accessible from both parts of the hall completes the facility. The wooden cladding creates a pleasant indoor climate, while environmentally friendly and reusable materials make the construction not only functional but also sustainable.

Proven solutions for current challenges
NUSSLI has established itself as a specialist for temporary sports facilities. The company has already completed similar projects in Allschwil (BL), Oberwil (BL) and Stettlen (BE). "Our modular construction method enables short implementation times and a high degree of adaptability. This allows municipalities to react quickly to acute bottlenecks and at the same time gain time for long-term planning," says Roman Horisberger.

Different requirements, individual solutions
In Allschwil, a temporary single gymnasium was built during the summer vacations to ensure sports activities during the new construction. In Oberwil, NUSSLI built a temporary double gymnasium that will be used for at least ten years from summer 2024, giving those responsible time to develop a long-term school space strategy. For the Bern School of Design, which temporarily relocated to Bernapark in 2024, NUSSLI added a temporary sports hall with ancillary rooms on two levels to the campus infrastructure. Schools and clubs will use the facility, which was completed within a few weeks, until at least 2034.
