Gasteig HP8 with Isarphilharmonie, Munich
The Gasteig cultural center in Munich is temporarily moving to the interim quarters Gasteig HP8. The Munich Philharmonic Orchestra kicked things off in the fall of 2021 and is now residing in the new Isarphilharmonie. As general contractor, NUSSLI realized the temporary concert hall and the other modular buildings for the Munich City Library, the Munich Adult Education Center and the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts on the same site.
Europe's largest cultural center has to be completely renovated. However, it was impossible to rebuild the Gasteig with its 1,800 performances per year - concerts, theater performances, films, readings, shows - without interrupting operations. An alternative venue therefore had to be found, and so the new temporary Gasteig HP8 was built on the Stadtwerke München site in Sendling.

The new Isarphilharmonie: a concert hall of superlatives
The centerpiece of the Gasteig HP8 interim quarter is the five-story Isarphilharmonie, which offers the highest level of concert enjoyment in remarkable dimensions despite its modular design.
The concert hall was designed by architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) in close collaboration with Yasuhisa Toyota and his team from Nagata Acoustics, the acoustics experts who are also responsible for the Elbphilharmonie. NUSSLI realized the construction of the Interim Philharmonic Hall. Gasteig Managing Director Max Wagner praises those involved: "gmp, Toyota and NUSSLI - that's a dream team!
The construction of the imposing building consists of a steel shell made of system material and prefabricated wooden modules that form the interior fittings. The 60,000 m3 dark concert hall offers space for around 1800 spectators. Mayor Dieter Reiter is more than satisfied with the major cultural project. "With the Isarphilharmonie, Munich has one of the most extraordinary concert halls of our time. The acoustics are excellent and the atmosphere meets the highest standards."
Time pressure and little space on the construction site
A challenge for the NUSSLI team was not only the short construction phase of only 20 months, but also the very tight space conditions at the new Gasteig. The shell and shell, interior fittings, ceiling landscape, philharmonic hall, technical building equipment and fire protection - many sub-projects and processes ran in parallel in a very small space, which had to be planned and used precisely, not least because of corona.

NUSSLI was also responsible for the completion of the three other modular buildings on the Sendling site, which serve as a new temporary home for the Munich City Library, the Munich Adult Education Center and the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts.
