Big Air Festival, Chur
From 2021 to 2024, NUSSLI built the striking Big Air ramp and the central event infrastructure for the Big Air Chur, which served as the opening event of the FIS Freeski and Snowboard World Cup. In addition to the ramp structure, stages, production areas, and other temporary structures were built, bringing together sports, music, and a festival atmosphere on a single site. The combination of spectacular winter sports and a major event placed high demands on planning, structural engineering, and assembly.
A structure of superlatives: 40 meters high
The centerpiece of Big Air Chur was the impressive Big Air ramp. With a length of about 110 meters and a height of 40 meters, it served as the stage for world-class performances in freeskiing and snowboarding. On the structure, the world’s best athletes showcased their jumps and tricks to kick off the World Cup season. NUSSLI used approximately 650 metric tons of steel to build it. The complex structure had to meet the highest standards for load-bearing capacity, safety, and precision, while also withstanding the stresses of athletic competition, weather, and intensive use. From planning through installation, NUSSLI ensured that the ramp was ready on schedule and to the highest quality standards.
Infrastructure for Sports, Music, and Production
In addition to the Big Air ramp, NUSSLI constructed numerous other event structures. These included a 30 × 16-meter open-air stage with a pre-rig, a front-of-house (FOH) area, a delay tower, an IV platform, and various platforms and supports for the cable camera. The infrastructure was supplemented by a combination elevator and additional platforms in the area of the jump. The individual structures were functionally integrated, creating optimal conditions for sports competitions, concerts, TV productions, and safe visitor operations. Thanks to the modular design, the temporary structures could be efficiently assembled and dismantled just as quickly after the event.
Complex construction processes perfectly coordinated
Building a Big Air ramp of this magnitude requires precise coordination of all construction processes. Material logistics, assembly, safety requirements, and tight time frames must be perfectly synchronized so that the World Cup can take place as scheduled. NUSSLI’s many years of experience in temporary event construction enable efficient implementation even for technically challenging structures.
Together Toward the XAVER Award
Big Air Chur combines world-class international sports with live music and a festival experience to create a unique event format. In collaboration with First Event AG and the City of Chur, the project also impressed the expert jury of the XAVER Awards. The innovative overall concept was awarded bronze in the Best Public Event category in 2023.
