For the regular-season games of the BC Lions Football Club (Canadian Football League) and the first home games of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (Major League Soccer), NUSSLI built the temporary “Empire Field” stadium in Vancouver, Canada, meeting the highest standards of functionality and comfort. The client was the BC Pavilion Corporation (PavCo).
Facts About the Temporary Stadium
The temporary stadium is covered along its long sides and has a capacity of 27,500 seats, including commentary booths for radio and television as well as press seating, floodlights, lighting, and cladding. The stadium was equipped with 20,500 individual seats and 7,000 bench seats. In addition, there were 12 VIP boxes. The temporary stadium opened in June 2010 after a construction period of just three months.
Background Story
The BC Lions Football Club in Vancouver was one of the most prominent sports clubs in the Canadian Football League (CFL), and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC began playing in the North American Major League Soccer (MLS) starting in the 2011 season. Starting in the summer of 2010, the team’s home stadium, BC Place, underwent extensive renovations and was transformed into a world-class facility with the installation of a new retractable roof. During the construction work, the BC Lions’ home games in the 2010 season and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s first home games in the 2011 season were played in a temporary stadium.
