Sports Hall, Allschwill

The Allschwill high school was faced with an acute shortage of space. They desperately needed a new sports hall for the school. In just six weeks, NUSSLI built a temporary, high-quality single gymnasium in time for the new school year - a sustainable interim solution that can be easily dismantled after completion of the planned new building. Only environmentally compatible materials were used in the process.

Since August 30th, 2021, the children of the Allschwill high school have been going to gym class in the comfortable indoor climate of healthy wood. The barrier-free sports hall with attached containers for the locker rooms, sanitary facilities, tech and entrance area is part of a comprehensive school building plan with a new replacement building. However, it will be another five to seven years before the planned replacement building becomes available. The people responsible  at the Basel Department of Construction and Environmental Protection (BUD) therefore decided on a quick and simultaneously high-quality and sustainable interim solution that would immediately secure the school and sports operations.

NUSSLI's own reusable system material formed the basis for the functional building with its plain white façade made of sandwich panels, which, like a kind of assemblage of rods and connections, makes up many of NUSSLI's temporary solutions. It is thus sustainable because the hall requires no foundation and can be completely dismantled after use. The material used can then be flexibly re-used at another building site in the same or a new form.

To construct the hall, the NUSSLI Project Team first built a substructure made of system materials. A high-quality and standards-compliant gym floor was then laid on top of this. The walls, too, were made of reusable building materials. Of course, all materials used meet the highest standards in environmental and health terms. The hall floor, for example, is made of materials that are entirely free of toxic substances, and as little plastic as possible was used in the changing rooms and sanitary facilities, as well as in the technical equipment and entrance area.

Inside, the sports hall is furnished with light wood and includes an equipment room.  The six containers attached to the hall with two changing rooms and showers, a barrier-free wardrobe with shower and toilet, and a separate toilet are also made entirely of wood. Parallel to the assembly of the hall on the construction site, NUSSLI already began constructing the wooden containers at its in-house timber production and equipped them with all lines, connections and sanitary utilities. On site in Allschwil, all that remained to be done was installing all connections and linking these to the local main grid.
