Monheim am Rhein and NUSSLI celebrate completion of Europe's largest sports hall

The eight-bay sports hall, built by NUSSLI as general contractor, was officially inaugurated in Monheim am Rhein, Germany. Currently Europe's largest sports hall, it was handed over on March 31 and is now available for use by the comprehensive school on Berliner Ring, the Otto Hahn Gymnasium, and local clubs.

April 2025

NUSSLI began work on Europe's largest sports hall in spring 2023. Project participants celebrated the topping-out ceremony at the end of February 2024, and the official opening took place on March 31. "The sports hall was built within an ambitious schedule, so our expertise as a general contractor with rapid construction solutions was particularly in demand. Our thanks go to the city of Monheim am Rhein; their rapid and unbureaucratic cooperation was a decisive factor in the success of this project", explains Andy Böckli, Group CEO of NUSSLI. The impressive sports hall was constructed as a hybrid structure using prefabricated elements. This approach saved considerable time on the construction site and ensured that school operations at the Berliner Ring school center and the surrounding area were minimally disrupted. Starting in April, students and club members will be able to use the state-of-the-art sports facility.

Far more than a sports hall

For the city of Monheim am Rhein, the new eight-court sports hall on the grounds of the Berliner Ring school center is a relevant meeting place and place of identification. The eight-court sports hall offers a total of 4,400 m² of pure sports space on two levels, offering plenty of flexibility and opportunities for sports and games. Four hall units can be used as either an eight-court hall or two four-court halls, as needed. Changing rooms, restrooms, and technical rooms, storage, stairwells, and the foyer are spread over a further 3,000 m². A retractable telescopic grandstand with 500 seats is available for events with an audience.

Architectural eye-catcher

To blend in visually with the surroundings, the main playing field of the impressive building is lowered by one level, so that the lower sports hall with the telescopic grandstand is five meters below ground level. A light-gray perforated sheet metal facade gives the sports hall its striking exterior appearance. The adjacent building, which houses the foyer, changing rooms, and sanitary and technical rooms, also received a distinctive larch wood facade. The hall section consists of precast reinforced concrete elements, prestressed concrete trusses, and suspended timber beams. The supporting structure of the adjacent building is a timber construction consisting of flat slabs, walls, and columns.

Teamwork Leads to Success

As the general contractor, NUSSLI planned, coordinated, and implemented the construction of the eight-court sports hall together with project partners asp Architekten GmbH for the architecture, Schlaich Bergermann Partner for the structural design, the engineering firm Herzner und Schröder for the technical building services, and the specialist fire protection planners from Corall Ingenieure GmbH. NUSSLI relied on almost 150 partner companies for the implementation – around half of them from the region. This made the project not only an architectural but also a regional collaborative effort.
