Projects Exhibit constructions

Multi-story pavilions for product or brand launches, temporary exhibition halls, a round theatre built on a wooden framework: the list of unusual projects that we have planned and built is almost endless.

In other words, we can carry out all kinds of projects - from a simple podium or a special construction to individualized trade fair grandstands that really make a mark. Your flexible partner - always project-specific, quality- and cost-conscious.

We form integrated teams with creative partners (e.g. designers) to offer complete solutions from a single source.

Time to Share for the Company Anniversary

Credit Suisse gave itself a birthday present (150 years) of a special kind in the spring. The famous artists couple Christo and Jeanne Claude presented the documentation on "The Gates" for the first time at the Sechseleuten-wiese in the heart of Zurich for a period of 16 days.

For that event, NUSSLI built the impressive exhibition hall (70 x 40 x 15 meters) and was responsible for the hall structure, covering, floor, gallery, stairs, doors, forecourt and interior finishing. The project actually was a logistic challenge since 600 tons of materials had to be used in the construction in an extremely short time. For dismounting the hall, NUSSLI had only one week. The effort was worth the while. All in all 93,000 visitors saw the exhibition. A great success for Credit Suisse and a great challenge for NUSSLI to realize this exciting exhibition that celebrated its world première in Zurich.

Basel Watch and Jewellery Show, Hall 3

The stand area in Hall 3 (approx. 6,000 m2) housed a total of 160 exhibitors. The coherent, high-quality visual appearance of the stands was created by Dutch designer Tom Postma.

NUSSLI was responsible for their realisation, production and multiple assembly. In addition to the logistical and production challenges, NUSSLI also had the task of realising customers' interior design requirements, which in some cases were quite unusual.

Mercedes-Benz Motorsport Set, DTM and Formula 1

Mercedes Benz set itself the target of creating a new and uniform image for all European events of DTM and Formula 1. We were able to produce the two motorsport sets with the architecture modules M-Box and U-nit, and were also entrusted with assembling and dismantling the sets.

Besides the technical production challenge posed by the steel construction, the task also poses challenges in the areas of logistics and quality assurance: On the one hand – with individual modules being re-used up to 20 times – adhering to the quality requirements can be ensured only by careful and proper handling. On the other hand, the changing locations and tight timetabling of DTM and Formula 1 also challenge us in terms of logistics.

Appearance by BMW at the IAA in Frankfurt

BMW wanted something special for its appearance at the automobile exhibition in Frankfurt - an impressive backdrop for the presentation of high-speed dreams on four wheels. In record time the customer's ideas were interpreted with unique architecture and a temprary steel-framed hall with a surface area of 3,400 m² and a height of 16 meters.

Is was completed after only two months' planning time and two months of construction. It is not only the size, but also the extraordinary degree of difficulty which make the BMW hall a flagship project par excellence.

The completely crease-free cushion-type facade, made of layers of membrane, the solid glass dors and an exterior lift are examples of the project's far from everyday features.

Staging of «West Side Story», lakeside stage at Bregenz, 2003

In the space of a record six months a miniature Manhattan was planned, produced and assembled.

The result was an impressive skyline. 400 tons of steel and 3,000 m2 of glass were used to create the backdrop of the US metropolis for the world-famous play. The curved glass facade is one of the technical highlight of which the project team is particularly proud.

Presentation of the new Audi A8, Barcelona

«We've done it!», said the assembly crew for the pavilion in Barcelona where journalists scrutinized the new Audi A8. From the date on which the order was placed there were three weeks for planning and production, a further two weeks later the pavilion was ready for use.

A fully equipped structure, 18 meters square and 8 meters high had to be built in the narrow inner courtyard of the World Trade Center complex. A high-quality, powder-coated covering of aluminium sheeting and the steel-glass frontage with insulated, tinted security glass indicated the high quality of the pavilion.

Trade fair stand for Siemens at HMI Hanover

The core of the Siemens trade fair stand consisted of a 100 meter long, 4 meter high cat-walk on which three 16 meter long coulds had to be placed. Inside these clouds, video and laser shows enchanted visitors. It wasn't just assembling the 80 ton structure that was challenging.

The cloud structure consisted of splines (palm lines) without continuous radii. The latest 3D computer programs were used to produce workshop drawings for the production of arched steel members and biomorphic membranes, which spanned the inside and outside of the cloud skeleton.

Staging of «La Bohème», Lakeside stage at Bregenz, 2001

For the staging of Puccini's «La Bohème» we had the job of designing and building not only the oversized table and the 18 m high chairs, but also the hydraulics, the pneumatics and the control mechanisms: including those required to raise a nearly 8 m tall ballpoint pen and two enormus postcards on the main stage. But also the specially conceived train surprised the crowd when it followed the edge of the table.

VW concert hall, Worldexpo 2000 Hanover

How do you turn a trade fair hall into a concert hall which in acoustic terms meets the demands of the best orchestral players in the world (such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra)? Answer: By integrating a 67 meters long, 30 meters wide and 14 meters high closed shell with a 2.5 meter thick wall and ceiling. NUSSLI both undertook and completed the planning of the construction schedule and all the interior features.

The base is a supporting scaffold which is clad on the outside with coated chipboard and inside with 50 mm thick, veneered 3S boards. The arrangement of the unit was conceived and optimized in collaboration with the renowned acoustics specialist, Professor Karlheinz Müller, as was the case previously with the acoustics in the building. The whole thing - including seating for 1,620 and full air-conditioning - was erected within approximately 45 working days.

Expo-Theater, Worldexpo 2000 Hanover

As the main contractor NUSSLI set up a (theatre) house on the Expo-Plaza which could be dismantled and erected in another location after Expo 2000: Peter Zadek’s spectacular new production of Shakespeare’s «Hamlet» will be staged here (amongst other things).

8 weeks will be sufficient to assemble the theatre building - with everything it needs: An auditorium with 900 seats, the fly tower with four towers and a surrounding 2-story gangway for technical support, rooms for light and sound production, cloakrooms, heating, ventilation and airconditioning installations. Incidentally prefabricated concrete units are being used as a foundation and will be laid directly on the ground. The supporting structure comprises system cassette supports from our staging system.

«The Dual System» Pavilion, Worldexpo 2000 Hanover

The term «Dual System» refers to a company which has made its name with environmentally-friendly packaging design.

The so-called «Cyclebowl», with a diameter of 26 meters and a height of 23 meters, is a highly complex structure: the load-bearing framework, a steel frame weighing 250 tons, has been clad in transparent sheets, supported by a current of air in the interior.

The roof is also unique in the world: it consists of a huge balloon, also transparent. As the main contractor, we saw this project as an opportunity to demonstrate convincingly how man, nature and technology can work together in ideal circumstances.

«Humankind» , Worldexpo2000 Hanover

For the «Biege», a collection of craft workshops, NUSSLI produced the theme park «Humankind». This complex project included the timber structures of the so-called ship’s stern, about 70 individual cubes and a cube tower with a built-in lift and steps.

The countless small details took careful planning and were very labor-intensive, including as they did metal railings, glass borders, cement fiber slabs, mesh grids and stud plates, timber cladding and exhibition walls.

Outdoor-Service units, Worldexpo 2000 Hanover

We have set up over 400 small buildings on a modular basis, dispersed over the whole area of the World Exhibition.

The modular system enables us to find solutions which meet widely differing customer requirements: at Expo 2000 our service units were used among other things for cash desks, bistros, sales points, sanitation facilities and for cash or snack dispensing machines.

«Klangkörper Schweiz» Pavilion, Worldexpo 2000 Hanover

40,000 beams made from Swiss Douglas firs and larches have been stacked up to make the «Klangkörper Schweiz» pavilion. The job of building architect Peter Zumthor’s fascinating structure presented us with unusual and rather appealing challenges: as well as the pavilion itself, we were to build three infrastructure elements inside in the form of open ellipses.

We also organized and/or carried out the work on the foundations and electrical, sanitation and heating/ventilation/air-conditioning fittings. The greatest challenge of all - besides the architectonic standards - was the precision required and the logistical problems involved when working with 3,000 m3 of timber and 300 tons of steel.

Staging of «A Masked Ball», lakeside stage at Bregenz

A book as a stage - the construction of the vertical wall (Book wall) and of the front part of the book with a «flap» was not only a challenge in the planning: the book wall had a “sail” 22 x 34 m large anchored to the concrete base of the lakeside stage in such a way that the construction could withstand winds of up to 150 km/h.

Within the wall were platforms and steps for the light and sound technicians. In the «flap» project, hydraulics played a key role: ten cylinders were used to move the book flap, two sliding doors, a 29 m long table and the bookmark.

«Titanic» Exhibition, Zurich Fair

An unusual exhibition posed an unusual challenge: we had to set up all necessary wooden flooring, walls and ceilings, various background constructions and the entrance ramp on a total area of about 3,000 m2.

And that in a very short time: the assembly, which we accomplished with a crew of on average eight workers, took just four weeks.

Volkswagen Convention, Seefeld (Austria)

VW whistled - and 15,000 dealers from virtually every country in the world came: to the 5,000 m2, 12 m tall hall which (together with all necessary infrastructure) we had erected on a green Tyrolean meadow.

From the point of view of its function, the structure was in no way inferior to a permanent building: the floor was laid with heavy-duty wooden tiles. And all the equipment for the perfectly designed light, laser and multimedia show was attached to the roof with no problem at all.

Volkswagen Convention, Leutasch (Austria)

The task: to set up an area for exhibition and viewing of 15,000 m2, partially covered, on an exhibition site with differences in level of up to 5 metres. The picture shows how we solved the problem.

What cannot be seen there are the 200 juggernauts and their escort vehicles which carried the required materials from Telfs down in the valley up to Leutasch.

Presentation of the new Type 3 BMW, Bottrop

The Warner Brothers Studios in Bottrop (D) were the setting for a premiere, which was to echo «Starlight Express». Our task was to build a suitable stage - round, on three levels, with two ramps and a sliding central part.

Shortly before the high point of the show the central part of the stage was pulled back - whereupon the Type 3 BMW magically appeared on a large elevating and rotating platform.

Trade Fair Stand to celebrate Siemens 150th Anniversary, Hanover

A tunnel-like entrance showing the company’s history, 500 seats in the arena which was enclosed in plastic sheeting, a viewing platform, a 50 m long special platform, panoramic walls to display graphics and a room swathed in black Molton for projecting holograms: NUSSLI tackled the stand so creatively that it was declared the best…

Volkswagen-Stand an der IAA, Frankfurt

We had just nine days to build the futuristic bridge structure with two escalators - that is to say, to put together steel and wooden components with a total weight of 170 tonnes to make a perfect whole. The fact that it all fitted in the end to the nearest millimetre is a tribute to the work of our planners and designers.

Product launch for Schindler, Munich

Only a hangar at Munich Airport was high enough properly to present and demonstrate the latest Schindler lift system. NUSSLI was commissioned to carry out the planning, delivery and assembly of the whole event.

It goes without saying that we kept to the strict time schedule for assembling and dismantling the required infrastructure (partition walls, seating, stage, multi-storey lift tower, catering area).

Trade fair stand for Mercedes Benz, Daimler Chrysler, Geneva Motor Show

The job specification required several exhibition platforms with steps made of metal and beech wood, a VIP lounge, office areas and also a whole series of glass borders and exhibition walls.

During construction the customer added one or two extra requirements which, thanks to the experience of our project manager and of the assembly crew, we were able to incorporate promptly.

Audi A8 and A4 presentations, Munich, Bonn, Berlin, Ulm

When new models are first launched, nothing is left to chance: with a view to the planned multimedia show, Audi commissioned us to design and build a suitable stage.

The figures speak for themselves: 600 m2 on three levels, 15 m high projection surfaces. In addition there were several projection scaffolds and a circular grandstand with 3,000 seats.
